Sinn Féin County Councillor John Brady has welcomed the deal that was signed to complete the Rathnew to Arklow bypass on the N11 in Co. Wicklow. However he is looking for assurances to be given that locals will be employed on the project and that guarantees will be given that at no point in the future tolls will be introduced.
Speaking after the deal was signed Brady said "I warmly welcome thesigning of this contract, its been long awaited and unfortunately wehave had far too many false dawns on this scheme in the past. The dealinvolves the construction, operation, maintenance and financing of the16.5 kilometres of four-lane dual carriageway linking the existingArklow Bypass with the existing Rathnew/Ashford Bypass in Co.Wicklow.The contract has been awarded to BAM civil limited in a publicprivate partnership and is worth 282 million euro. It’s expected tocreate up to 1,000 jobs during development of the Bypass which isbeing bundled in with the N7 Newlands Cross free-flow system in westDublin. I think its important that the vast majority of these jobs goto people in Wicklow who have the necessary skills and that thematerials for the project would also be sourced from suppliers in theCounty."
Cllr Brady continued "What the people of Wicklow want now isguarantees that some of the thousands of unemployed people from thecounty will benefit from the construction of the dual carriageway.Guarantees are also needed that at no point in the future will theroad be tolled."
"We have been told that the provision of tolls are not to beimplemented at this point, however we need assurances, that at nopoint in the future will they be installed on the N11. The signing ofthe contract is welcome if somewhat long overdue." Brady concluded.

Questions need to be asked as 280 jobs go in Rathdrum-Brady
Reacting to news of 280 job losses in Rathdrum Sinn Féin Councillor
John Brady has asked where exactly is the governments job retention
plan.
Cllr Brady stated “This will be a severe blow to the workers and the
community around the MSD site in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow. By the IDA’s
own job multiplier over 100 other local jobs will be affected.
Yesterday we had a succession of government ministers claiming that
their plan was working and the jobs crisis was turning the corner.
That is not the experience of these workers or the growing number of
long-term employed or emigrants."
“Six months ago the Taoiseach, speaking at the MSD sister site in
Ballydine, Tipperary highlighted the signs that the economy was
turning when 70 jobs had been created there. Six months later and the
same company are shredding 280 jobs does the same logic ring true?
It’s important that the needs of the workers are met. It has been
reported that some of these jobs have been lost to Singapore. If this
is the case the government must act to access, as a matter of urgency,
the European Globalisation Fund to assist these workers back into
employment." continued Brady
He went onto say "A number of questions do need to be asked however,
where is the governments job retention plan? 280 workers are going to
be out of a job, we need to know that everything has been done that
can be done by the government and the Minister to ensure these jobs
are retained. Also questions must be asked about support this company
received from state agencies and the value of that support in terms of
jobs creation, retention and displacement."
Cllr Brady concluded "Its important that we remember that there are
real people, families and communities behind the statistics. These job
losses would rip the heart out of any community, but they will be felt
hardest in a rural community such as Rathdrum. Everything must be done
to either retain or have a new buyer brought in and the government
needs to take a lead role in that." Ends

Demolition of Dawson's Amusement eyesore begins on Bray Seafront
Sinn Féin County Councillor John Brady has welcomed the commencement of work on the Seafront in Bray to demolish the old unused Dawsons Amusements which is located at the Bray Head end of the prom. In 2012 Bray Town Council gave permission for the demolition of the unsightly building and the instillation of 130 surface carparking places.
Speaking after the commencement of works on site Cllr Brady said "I must welcome the fact that over the next few weeks we will see the old Dawsons Amusements building removed from the landscape. The buildings was erected in the 1980's and it received enormous amounts of controversy because of its appearance and its proximity to Bray Head. In 2012 Bray Town Council gave the go ahead to demolish the unsightly building and to construct a new surface carpark. This week has seen the contractors move on site and the process of stripping the old building has begun".
Cllr Brady continued "Once the eyesore is removed it will visually enhance the area. Other plans that had been in place to erect apartments on site have been shelved and any long term plans to redevelop the area must go through the planning process and be respectful of the location. For now however there are plans in place to enhance the area and to make it vibrant again and this has started with the demolition of the old amusements"
Cllr Brady concluded "Whilst everyone will be happy to see the back of the unsightly structure, one must bare in mind the amount of employment it did provide over the years particularly to young students during the summer months. This really is the end of an era for many reasons".

Wicklow Sinn Fein to hold pre budget Protest
Wicklow Sinn Féin are to hold a Pre budget protest this Saturday, 1st
December at 2pm. The protest will take place outside the constituency office
of Wicklow Labour TD Anne Ferris and it will happen only days before
Budget 2013 which will take place on Wednesday 5th December. Sinn Fein
are campaigning for a fair budget, against cuts and against the
property tax.
Speaking ahead of Saturdays protest Sinn Féin County Councillor John
Brady said "We are asking people to take to the streets of Bray on
Saturday to demand a fair budget. Sinn Féin have shown in our pre
budget submission that there is a better way. We have been told that
this will be another tough budget and that there will be cuts and
taxes of €3.5 billion included, this will be the 5th consecutive
budget of its type and its simply deepening the recession and
increasing unemployment".
Cllr Brady went on to say "Politics is all about choices and its clear
the Government have choices to make on December 5th. We are simply
asking for fairness and this simply means those who can pay a little
bit more doing so, fairness also means protecting struggling families
and cuts starting at the top. It has been well flagged that Labour and
Fine Gael are planning on introducing a property tax, this will be the
last straw for struggling householders and will be difficult to
implement. A wealth tax is both fair and easy to implement. The main
message of the pre budget protest is tax wealth, not homes".
Cllr Brady concluded "I am asking people who what to see fairness in
next weeks budget to come out on Saturday and join in the protest, it
will take place outside the office of Labour TD Anne Ferris and will
be a chance for people to let their voices be heard prior to the
Budget".

Wicklow Sinn Féin Launch comprehensive Jobs Plan
Wicklow Sinn Féin has launched its jobs plan which demonstrates that,
with political will, the government can deliver 156,000 additional
jobs.
Wicklow Sinn Féin County Councillor John Brady was joined by party
colleagues, Cllr Rossa Murray, Cllr Gary O'Reilly, Oliver O'Brien and
James Charlton for the launch in Ernie's public house in Wicklow Town
Cllr Brady said that the plan has been fully costed and provides a
socially responsible way to reduce the deficit and create and retain
jobs.
“In the last four years Ireland has shed more jobs than any other
western state per capita since the Great Depression”.
“Sinn Féin has identified €13billion which can be used to create jobs,
increase productivity and improve competiveness. This money would be
sourced from the European Investment Bank, incentivised investment
from the private pension sector and the National Pension Reserve Fund.
“Investment on this scale would retain 15,000 jobs and create about
156,000 jobs.
“Our jobs plan will invest in essential infrastructure; help
entrepreneurs by removing obstacles to doing business and supporting
them to retain and create new jobs; exploit the potential of existing
and new state enterprises particularly in broadband roll-out,
renewable energy and eco-tourism and invest in agri-food and rural
communities. In Wicklow we would create jobs by proceeding with the
N11 dual carriageway between Rathnew and Arklow, we would put in place
a Social Housing Development Programme. We would also invest in new
schools and primary care centers.
“Wicklow would also benefit from a new emphasis on agri-food and
seafood sectors as well as sustainable tourism.
Cllr Brady concluded “As an opposition party we will be pushing the
government to adopt these proposals to reverse the spiraling
unemployment and emigration that has plagued this county for years.”

Wicklow Sinn Féin to launch Extensive Job Creation Plan
Wicklow Sinn Féin to launch Extensive Job Creation
Wicklow Sinn Féin are to launch the party’s new job creation policy
document, the plan proposes measures to create 156,000 jobs and it
will be launched at a public meeting upstairs in Ernies Bar in Wicklow
Town at 7.30pm on Thursday 8th November.
Entitled Jobs Plan – Enterprise Policy for the 21st Century, the
document is a detailed 60 page stimulus package that sets out a
comprehensive plan aimed at tackling the current unemployment crisis.
Speaking ahead of the launch Wicklow Sinn Féin County Councillor John
Brady said “In the last four years Ireland has shed more jobs than any
other western state per capita since the Great Depression. Last year
the economy lost 33,400 jobs. In 2011 our communities lost 87,000 to
emigration. It is clear that government policy is not working. The
government has paid lip service to job creation. Their ambitions for
this state are limited to Troika-led retrenchment. Private investment
has reduced by €30 billion. Government has withdrawn €24 billion. In
Wicklow there are 12,164 people currently unemployed and all the
relevant bodies such as the IDA have completely overlooked Wicklow”
“We have identified €13 billion which can be sourced to create jobs,
improve competitiveness and increase productivity. This would be
funded from the National Pension Reserve Fund, European Investment
Bank, incentivised investment from the private pension sector and we
would end the capital spending cuts of this government. An investment
of this scale would create about 156,000 jobs and retain up to 15,000
existing jobs. Smart investment will secure sustainable jobs and our
national competitiveness into the future”.
Brady continued “Our jobs plan will invest in essential
infrastructure; help entrepreneurs by removing obstacles to doing
business and supporting them to retain and create new jobs; exploit
the potential of existing and new state enterprises particularly in
broadband rollout, renewable energy and eco-tourism and invest in
agri-food and rural communities”.
Brady went onto say “The Sinn Féin plan if implemented would create
thousands of jobs here in Wicklow and this would go a long way to
replacing some of the jobs that have been lost in companies such as
Veha, Kerry Foods, A O’Smith, Allergan and Schering-Plough to just
name a few”.
Cllr Brady concluded "The Jobs Plan is a comprehensive, costed and
government ready proposal and I appeal to members of the public and
representatives from the community and business sectors to attend our
launch and hear the proposals set out by Sinn Féin here in Wicklow”.
